Free site measure Plain, exposed aggregate and coloured Insured contractor Melbourne's east, south east and bayside

From $130 to $185 per m², supplied and laid

Exposed aggregate is a normal concrete pour with a decorative stone mix. Once it’s placed we spray a surface retarder, then wash the top layer of cement off the next morning so the stone shows through. Get the timing wrong and you get patchy results, which is why you want someone who does this every week.

Choosing the stone

Local stones like Castlemaine and Lilydale toppings keep the cost down. Imported quartz and river pebbles cost more but give you whites, creams and charcoals you can’t get locally. We bring sample boards to the site measure so you can see it against the house.

Sealing

We come back after the concrete has cured and apply a penetrating or film sealer. Film sealers give a wet look and richer colour, penetrating sealers are more natural and less slippery. On a steep drive we’ll steer you towards the penetrating option.

Where we pour exposed aggregate driveways

Bayswater, Bentleigh, Box Hill, Brighton, Camberwell, Clayton, Croydon, Dandenong, Doncaster, Ferntree Gully, Glen Waverley, Hawthorn, Keysborough, Lilydale, Mentone, Mount Waverley, Ringwood, Rowville, Springvale, Wantirna South and every suburb in between.

Process

From enquiry to a driveway you can park on

  1. Enquiry

Call or send the form with the suburb and the type of driveway. A site measure is booked, usually within a few days.

  2. Site measure and fixed quote

Dimensions, fall, access and drainage are assessed on site. A council crossover permit may be required for the street section. The written quote is fixed.

  3. Preparation and pour

Existing surface removed and the area prepped, with base material brought in where needed. Mesh laid, crossover formwork inspected by council, then the pour. Most residential driveways are one day on site.

  4. Cure and seal

Vehicles off for seven days. Exposed aggregate is sealed after the concrete has cured.

Exposed aggregate driveways questions

Why is exposed aggregate dearer than plain concrete?

The mix uses decorative stone instead of plain blue metal, it takes more labour on the day to wash off at the right moment, and it needs sealing after it cures. You're paying for finish and time.

Does it need resealing?

Every three to five years depending on sun and traffic. It's a quick job with a roller and keeps the colour up.

Can you match an existing exposed aggregate path?

Close but rarely exact. Stone batches vary. Bring us a sample and we'll get as near as the supplier allows.
